- Carotid Angioplasty and Stenting versus Endarterectomy in Asymptomatic subjects who are at Standard Risk for Carotid Endarterectomy with Significant Extracranial Carotid Stenotic Disease (ACT 1)
Have you been diagnosed with a blockage in your carotid artery?
Doctors at Massachusetts General Hospital are conducting a randomized clinical trial comparing the results of two ways of treating blockages in the carotid arteries. In this study, some subjects will have standard surgery called carotid endarterectomy (CEA) to treat their blocked arteries. Other subjects will have carotid artery stenting (CAS) done with the Emboshield Embolic Protection System and the Xact Rapid Carotid Stent System. Randomization is 3 chances to have the carotid stent to 1 chance to have surgery. Subjects will be 18-79 years of age. Follow-up requirement is 5 years. If you have questions about this research study or are interested in participating, you should contact Dr. Joseph Garasic, the Principal Investigator or Debbie O'Shaughnessy, the Research Nurse. We are available to provide you with further information regarding this study. Please call (617)-726-3057.
