- Phase II/III, Randomized, Placebo-Controlled Trial of Arimoclomol in SOD1 Positive Familial Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis
The Neurological Clinical Research Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital is seeking individuals with Familial Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) for a ‘Phase II/III Randomized, Placebo-Controlled, Trial of Arimoclomol in SOD1 Positive Familial Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis’. This is a 12 month research study to learn how effective and safe a drug called Arimoclomol is compared to a placebo for those with SOD1 positive familial ALS. Subjects will be randomly assigned (that is, by chance) to receive Arimoclomol or placebo (looks like Arimoclomol, but contains no active medication).
Arimoclomol is an investigational drug that increases the levels of proteins known as “chaperones”, which may improve a cell’s ability to survive certain types of stress. Arimoclomol comes in capsules to take by mouth. The study is for those who have been recently diagnosed with familial ALS and you either know you have an SOD1 mutation, or are willing to undergo genetic testing to find out.
Study visits will occur both at Massachusetts General Hospital and remotely by phone and visiting nurse. To learn more about the study please contact the study coordinator, Robert Lawson, at 617-726-0563 or by e-mail at rjlawson@partners.org.
