Study Title: Fear extinction memory in primary insomnia

Study Description: The purpose of this research study is to find out more about how the human brain forms and stores emotional memories and how this is affected by good and poor sleep. If eligible for this study, you will have two fMRI scans and 3 ambulatory (at-home) nights of sleep recording.

You may be eligible if:
• You have chronic difficulties falling asleep or staying asleep
• You have been diagnosed with insomnia or believe you have insomnia
• You are between 18 and 65 years of age
• You are right-handed
• You have normal (or corrected) vision
• You are not taking psychotropic or sleep medications
• You do not have any metal in your body
• You are a non-smoker
• You are not pregnant

You are not be eligible if:
• You have a sleep disorder other than insomnia
• You perform shift work or frequently cross different time zones
• You have ever been diagnosed with a psychiatric disorder such as schizophrenia, psychotic disorder, bipolar disorder, major depression, PTSD, OCD autism or anxiety disorder
• You have a major medical illness or chronic pain condition
• You have a neurological condition such as epilepsy, MS, or history of stroke or head injury
• You have an alcohol dependence or substance abuse condition
• You cannot remain alcohol and drug free for a 2-week period

This study involves:
• Having a formal psychiatric and sleep disorders interview at MGH
• Completing 14 days of sleep diaries while wearing a wrist activity monitor
• Completing a series of questionnaires
• Completing 3 nights of ambulatory sleep recording in your own home
• Providing saliva samples and a urine sample
• Having 2 MRI scans at MGH while undergoing a test involving an occasional mild electric shock

Each study visit at MGH will take about two hours.

Participants will be paid $350 for completing the entire study. If you leave the study early, we will pay you on a prorated schedule for parts you have completed. If you complete only the mental health and sleep evaluations, you will receive $60.
