- A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of D-cycloserine augmentation of behavior therapy for body dysmorphic disorder
Body Image Treatment Research Study
-Do you dislike the way any part(s) of your body (e.g., your skin, hair, nose, eyes) look?
-Do you think about your appearance for more than one hour per day?
-Do you worry that your muscles are not big enough, or do you spend a lot of time lifting weights to enhance your muscles?
-Do you engage in any behaviors intended to check on, hide, or fix your appearance (e.g., mirror checking, comparing yourself to others, excessive grooming behaviors)? Or do you avoid any places, people or activities because of your appearance concerns (e.g., do you avoid bright lights, mirrors, dating, or parties)?
-Do your appearance-related thoughts or behaviors cause you a lot of anxiety, sadness, or shame?
-Do you have problems with your work, school, family, or friends because of your appearance concerns?
If you answered ‘yes’ to these questions, you might be eligible to participate in a research study at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). If you qualify, you will receive the following:
Diagnostic Evaluation
Behavior Therapy Treatment
In addition to the behavior therapy, you will also be assigned to receive either a placebo or a medication that we hope may enhance the learning experience during exposure.
You will also be asked to fill out some questionnaires assessing BDD symptoms, anxiety and mood. The treatment will be at no cost. You will be asked to attend to one or two sessions per week for the first seven weeks. The entire study involves 15 visits to the clinic.
If you are interested in participating or would like to get further information, please call 1-888-HEAL-BDD at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), Body Dysmorphic Disorder Clinic, visit www.mghocd.org/bdd or email at bdd@partners.org.
Thank you.
