Do you have osteoarthritis of the knee?

The purpose of this research is to determine if transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) combined with transcranial ultrasound (TUS) can reduce pain caused by Osteoarthritis of the knee.

What we are studying

Dr. Fregni is studying the effects of non-invasive brain stimulation called transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) combined with transcranial ultrasound (TUS) can improve the symptoms caused by Osteoarthritis(OA) in the knee. tDCS is a form of non-invasive brain stimulation, and TUS is an imaging technique. The researchers are looking for people who: • Are between 18-85 years old • Have osteoarthritis of the knee with pain within the last 6 months. This trial has placebo groups, which means that you have a chance of not receiving any active intervention. However, if you find out that you received a sham stimulation at the end of your participation you will be given the opportunity to enroll into an open label phase, where you will receive active tDCS + active TUS. If you choose to participate, you would need to complete about 16 visits to finish the study. Three of those visits will last approximately 3 hours and the others will not take more than 2 hours of your time each. You will be compensated $25 per visit for your participation. Your participation is voluntary. Whether you participate or not will have no effect on the medical care you receive at Partners Health Care. You may not receive any direct personal health benefits as a result of your participation in this research study. We hope that the results will help us to have a better understanding of chronic pain in osteoarthritis, and that it will benefit patients with osteoarthritis in the future. - Have osteoarthritis of the knee with pain during the past 6 months.

If you have had any of the following, you may not participate in the study:
- Pregnant at time of enrollment in the study
- Have history of seizures, any metal in the head and/or implanted medical devices
- History of alcohol or drug abuse in the past 6 months
